Home education

We'd love to welcome more home-educating families to the RSM. We don't have regular home education sessions running just yet, but we're keen to get something started. If your family would like a particular club or activity, or you're a tutor or facilitator interested in running sessions for home-educated children, we'd love to hear from you. Our rooms suit music, drama, dance, creative workshops and more, and your ideas will help shape what we offer.

To share your ideas or register your interest, get in touch.

Your first visit

Coming somewhere new with little ones can feel like a lot. Here's what you need to know before your first session.

Can siblings come along?

We're an inclusive venue and love welcoming families. Each class is run by an independent facilitator, though, so they decide whether siblings can join and on what terms. That way every session stays comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. Please check with the class organiser before you come.

What happens in a typical session?

Every class at the RSM is run by its own facilitator, so each has its own format, activities and style. For the best idea of what to expect, have a look at the class details or contact the organiser directly. They'll be happy to tell you more.

Is there buggy access and baby changing?

Yes to buggy access. There's a ramp up to our front door, and both the Recital Hall and the Ensemble Room have wide doors, so getting in with a pushchair is easy. Unfortunately we don't yet have baby changing facilities. We're fundraising for a building extension that will include a fully accessible Changing Places toilet, and we look forward to offering this as soon as funding allows.

Parking and getting here

We have a small private car park on site and this is available for our visitors to use. We kindly ask that you leave it free for visitors with mobility needs where possible. There are also three 2-hour disc car parks within a four-minute walk: Lyon Street West, Queensway and the Morrisons Multistorey Car Park. London Road Car Park (by the library) is another nearby option, though it isn't part of the disc scheme. You'll find us at The Recital Hall, 46 Sudley Road, Bognor Regis.

Safeguarding

The safety and wellbeing of children and families is our top priority. The RSM has a robust Safeguarding Policy. Before any class can run here, we ask every facilitator for their DBS certificate and proof of insurance.

Term dates

We broadly follow West Sussex County Council (WSCC) school term dates. Each facilitator sets their own timetable, though, so please check with your class organiser for exact dates, including half-term breaks.

Unconventional Strings: A Workshop with William Jack

Ready to hear your instrument in a whole new way? Join acclaimed cellist and performer William Jack for an electrifying afternoon exploring the outer edges of string playing.

This workshop is geared toward intermediate to advanced players, but younger musicians and all abilities are warmly welcome — string playing at any stage brings something valuable to the room. And whether you're picking up your instrument or simply curious to watch, everyone is invited to be part of the experience.

In this session, William will cover:
- Unconventional string techniques that push past the traditional playbook
- Unique cello sounds for both live performance and studio recording
- How to "groove" on string instruments — and why it matters more than you think
- William's signature Cellopickin' technique: playing sideways with a plectrum for a totally fresh sound
- Practical tips for confident improvisation

Have a piece you're working on? Bring it along — William welcomes students who'd like to share or get feedback, though it's by no means required. Come ready to play, watch, or just soak up the inspiration.

Stick around for the evening finale: William takes the stage to perform This Old Cello Box, Volume 3 — a must-see follow-up to an afternoon of boundary-breaking string exploration.

Don't miss this rare chance to learn from and watch one of the most inventive voices in string performance today.
